Engaging Learners in Conversation Courses (FQ)
Use it or lose it - nowhere is this more relevant than in language learning. English conversation courses at various levels are a popular way to keep language skills from rusting. A very important aspect of these courses is keeping learners engaged, while also enabling them to improve and extend their command of English - vocabulary as well as grammar. An emphasis on topics that are of special interest to our participants is a sure-fire way to ensure the former, regardless of level. However, the latter is a critical factor in conversation courses at lower levels, thus requiring a different focus of planning. In this workshop we will look above and beyond books as materials in conversation courses at all levels. We will look at authentic resources and various media based on topics that our participants bring into class and reflect on how these can be adapted for use in our courses. Another focus of the workshop is vocabulary and grammar work: we will examine various methods of integrating these into creative and motivating speaking activities and authentic scenarios that facilitate deeper learning, especially at lower levels. Together, we will work on creating a toolbox of ideas that you can implement and adapt as needed for your conversation courses.
